The days of travelling to your local arcade could soon be behind players in the US thanks to the Rockin' Roller mobile arcade.

This arcade on wheels is housed in a 36ft trailer, decorated in a 50s theme and contains nine arcade games, two cranes, a photo booth and seven gumball-style vending machines.

Housing arcade classics such as Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Galaga and Centipede, the Rockin’ Roller mobile arcade is the brainchild of Stephanie and Jim Dickinson, a former mechanic and events planner.

Jim Dickinson said: "We knew we wanted to come up with an idea for a business that combined our professional skills, our interests, as well as those of our daughter and that we could create and run ourselves, but we had no idea what that was."

Then, while he was telling his daughter a story about a flat-bed truck that carried an amusement ride through his childhood neighbourhood, a plan started to come to life. "You paid 10 cents to ride it and it was something he always loved and looked forward to," Stephanie Dickinson said. "I thought it would be great to have something like that come around our neighborhood, particularly in the summer months when the kids are all outside playing."

A few weeks later the couple was cleaning out the basement and came across some old video games. "Our daughter, aged eight, and her friends went crazy over them," said Jim. "Unlike traditional gaming systems like Xbox and Wii, this was something entirely new and different to them. From there, the idea was born."

"We spent a lot of time researching the industry, meeting with legal counsel and financial institutions, talking to state and local government about licences and permits and seeking advice from local entrepreneurs and small business owners before we even started developing a business plan," said Stephanie.

The arcade can be rented for an hour and a half, for a half day or for a full day. The standard arcade party package includes 90 minutes of game play for $285. All the arcade games are set on free play after the flat fee is paid and each guest (up to 20 people) receives two tokens for the prize crane games. Additional tokens can be purchased for the crane games. There are also seven classic gumball machines on board which accept quarters and a photo booth that produces a photo sticker sheet with 16 images for $3.
