Subtle changes in the offer at the giant Edmonton Mall in Canada has seen a much higher percentage of leisure offer to support retail.

The mall, opened in 1981, has 31 million visitors each year and the percentage of floor space given over to leisure in that time has doubled. The pattern in the US and Canada is for shopping malls to close, but the extra-large ones survive by putting in more leisure.

The new American Dream opening soon in New Jersey will contain a water park, ice rink, indoor ski slope, rides, aquarium and a Legoland Discover centre.
