The imaginative project to sink a Boeing 747 jetliner into the sea off Bahrain to form the centrepiece of an underwater theme park, has taken a major step forward with the plane being towed out to sea and dispatched to the seabed.

The jet will form its own reef in the eco-friendly project that is set to open in August. A press conference was called for last week at Diyar Al Miuharraq to announce further details of the project. Industry, commerce and tourism minister Zayed Alzayani told the press: “We are proud to launch this unique eco-friendly project in co-operation with the Supreme Council for Environment and the private sector.
“The project is implemented in accordance with the strict environmental standards and international best industry practices in the field of environmental sustainability, with an overall aim to revive the kingdom’s marine ecosystem and preserve its local marine environment.”
The 1981-built Boeing was towed out to sea in an elaborate and unique undertaking and was widely shared on international media and local websites. The new undersea theme park will be called Dive Bahrain and will be the largest underwater theme park in the world.
