Councillors in Ashburton have given the green light to an 18-hole course that is set to be built on land at the EA Networks Centre.

The project is slated to cost NZ$500,000 (US$282,000) and has been planned for around a year.

Plans show that holes will be themed to parts of the local area, including Staveley Ice Rink, Mount Hutt, Lake Hood, the town clock and the agriculture sector. Work is also taking place with designers to ensure that the course will have accessible features.

Mayor Neil Brown said: “Staff have been investigating the details of the project and working with a specialist designer to come up with some concepts. It will be a great attraction for the town.”

Following the completion of the designs and appointment of a contractor, the project is expected to take around three months to build.
