It is not enough to set up an arcade or FEC any more, you need to have a headline draw. Ian Donegan spoke to the manufacturers making anchor attractions that get customers through the door.

It is widely accepted that it is no longer enough to provide coin-operated games and gaming machines in a location and simply remember to empty the cash boxes from time to time. Operators are becoming savvy to this. Notice the number of arcades and FECs located next to a cinema, mini-golf course or laser tag arena. But can they take this kind of anchor attraction into their own hands?

For an effective anchor attraction, several elements need to be incorporated. The activity needs to be something that has broad appeal to the target demographic. One that is mainly suitable for teens or young children may not be advisable, as this kind of attraction should appeal to the whole family. Ideally, it should incorporate activities that allow most people to participate. When done correctly, it should also be exciting, meaning that aesthetics and first impressions are important.
