FECs are widening their range of attractions to meet changing public demand.

There are anything between 10,000 and 20,000 family entertainment centres across North America, ranging from the little “mom and pop” games room operations to what are virtually indoor theme parks.

That is why the numbers are not more precise, as the definition of family entertainment centre is these days so wide. Gone are the days of an arcade full of coin-operated games. An FEC now can have no coin-op whatsoever, or even debit card-managed games; it can be a venue with nothing but soft play, climbing walls, ropeways, escape rooms, laser tag, bowling or any combination of the above.
