The sponsorship deals that see Premiership soccer clubs wearing the names of online gambling companies on their shirts may be stopped.

The lucrative deals are to come under the scrutiny of a British Government investigation into whether endorsements involving gambling operators are illegal.

The clubs that have carried gambling logos recently include Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur. MPs are worried that these deals by-pass the regulations which are designed to protect youngsters and the vulnerable.

It is illegal to target children with advertising under the present law and under the incoming regulations next September.
Whether the shirt deals contravene the regulation is hotly debated within legal circles.

Football clubs in France have already fallen foul of similar legislation.
