Svenska Spel says a “purely administrative misunderstanding” has led to a fresh fine and warning from the Swedish gambling regulator.

Spelinspektionen fined the operator SEK2m (£147,843) for failures relating to the relocation of two bingo halls and slot machines on ATMs within them.

Spelinspektionen said Svenska Spel “has not had a licence to operate games on ATMs at the new addresses.”

Svenska Spel admitted the failings. It said the misunderstanding related to the company understanding that a change of address should be reported to the gambling regulator.

However, changes in the regulations from July last year mean that when cash machines are moved, a notification about the gaming location is also required – and this must then be tested.

The notification was “not made correctly,” Svenska Spel said, meaning that after the bingo halls moved in July and September last year, the games housed on the ATMs within were not covered as part of the operator’s licence.

Svenska Spel has “corrected the routines” for moving cash machines and has also moved the cash machines from the relevant locations, it said.

“We regret what has happened,” said Thomas Engström, operations sales manager for Svenska Spel’s Vegas product line.

“Our intention was to do the right thing, but due to an administrative misunderstanding, it went wrong. It won't happen again.”
