In the US, Springfield mayor Dominic J Sarno has announced his backing for MGM Resorts for the casino licence to be awarded in western Massachusetts.
Sarno chose MGM’s $800m casino plan over the competing bid made by Penn National Gaming. However, even with this backing, the bid still needs to clear the city council vote and then a citywide referendum vote.
Once it has approval on all levels, MGM must compete with proposals by Mohegan Sun for a casino in Palmer and Hard Rock International’s plans for west Springfield.
The Massachusetts Gambling Commission will have the final say on which of the three companies wins the sole casino licence for west Massachusetts.
