The US state of North Carolina could support as many as nine casinos, according to the local news media Asheville Watchdog, if permission for more than the current three licences was made available.

The three already in North Carolina are on tribal lands, but independent consultant Spectrum Gaming Group, told the state authorities as far back as 2020 that the potential was there.

Now with a sports betting proposal about to be discussed in the legislature this week, its passing could open the door to further gambling opportunities.

Last year only online sports betting was given any kind of serious attention in the General Assembly, a bill passing in the Senate but failing in the House of Representatives by only three votes.

The consultant company said that a casino in Asheville could support nearly 1,000 slots and 34 tables, generating well over $100m annually.
