A second airport to serve Las Vegas, an idea that died in the recession, might be resuscitated, the Las Vegas Review-Journal has reported.

Clark County commissioners have voted for an environmental impact study for the airport on 6,000 acres about 30 miles south of Las Vegas as a supplement to McCarran International.

Rising tourism boosted traffic at McCarran to 48.5 million passengers last year. The airport can handle 60 million passengers, county aviation director Rosemary Vassiliadis said. That number would assume an additional 35,000 hotel rooms added to the market, she added.

Air capacity is crucial to the future of Las Vegas Valley, Vassiliadis said.
