One of the best-known gaming operators in Ireland, Richard Quirke, has passed.

Richard Quirke

Quirke, of Thurles, Co Tipperary, was the founder and operator of one of the best-known gaming venues in the Irish capital, Dr Quirkeys Good Time Emporium Casino in Upper O’Connell Street.

The venue is owned and operated by Dick Quirke’s company, Dublin Pool and Juke Box.

Quirke, who was 75 when he passed on Sunday, October 6, leaves a wife, Ann, children and grandchildren. The funeral is to be held this Saturday, October 12 at the Church of Our lady of Perpetual Succour, Foxrock, Dublin, at 11am. Quirke (right) is pictured with his son, Wesley.

Johnny Stergides of Electrocoin told us: “I met Richard in the late 1970s. He was the first customer from Dublin for us. He was to become a very active operator of our machines across his many locations and helped us to gain a large share of the Irish market in the 1980s.

“I remember the day he called me to invite me to see his new location in O’Connell Street in Dublin, for which we had supplied many machines. It became the largest arcade in the city.

“Richard’s smile weas his patent in all of his deals. He will be remembered with great fondness by the many people in the industry who met him.”
