The 27 casinos in Poland have a little breathing space in their battle to prevent the Polish Government from imposing an additional 10 per cent tax on input into slots and chips played in the locations.

It was originally intended to introduce the tax on January 1, 2009, to raise funds for the building of soccer stadiums for the 2012 European football championships. The Polish Government already takes 45 per cent of the cashbox in the casinos and the 208 slots arcades in Poland.

The proposed new tax had been vigorously opposed by the industry, which brought in independent research from a university to illustrate that the additional tax would have a devastating effect on the casino business in Poland and a negative impact on government receipts from the industry.

Now the planned tax has been stalled, giving the industry time to hold further talks with the authorities.
