A total of N$42m (€3.12m) was generated by gambling in Namiba in revenues and taxes in the year 2013-14.

The African country has six casinos and 254 licensed gambling houses, the latter providing 1,000 jobs directly.

The Namibian Government generated N$22m in revenue and taxes from gambling houses and N$20.7m from the casinos.

The minister of environment and tourism, Phamba Shifeta, revealed the figures at the opening of the Plaza Casino at the Hilton Hotel in the capital, Windhoek; the first 100 per cent Namibian-owned casino in Namibia.
