A survey has shown that 66 per cent of Swedes have gambled in the past 12 months, up six per cent on the same time last year.

The survey, conducted by the Swedish Gambling Inspectorate in collaboration with Novus, the data specialist, also revealed that 30 per cent of those who played are regular, weekly, players.

It also showed that 71 per cent of the participants on the internet are familiar with Spelpaus.se, the inspectorate’s national self-exclusion register, a substantial increase on the 54 per cent of last year.

The official betting channel, Svenska Spel, had 55 per cent of the business while ATG, the horse-racing totaliser board, had 23 per cent.

One of the problems for Swedish gambling, especially online, is that the survey showed that 95 per cent of those who play do not know how to see if a gaming company has a Swedish licence.
