Voters in Massachusetts have given the green light to implementing the state’s new Gaming Act to allow full-scale casinos.

The question of whether to bring the process to a halt, known as Question 3, was added to a ballot on the back of strong opposition.

However, the majority of voters decided this week not to repeal the 2011 law, which will potentially see three casinos and a slots parlour open within the state.

Two casino projects – one from MGM Resorts and another from Wynn Resorts – were previously approved but now the way is clear for the authorities to issue the relevant casino licences. Penn National Gaming is planning to open the new slots parlour next year.

Steve Crosby, chairman of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, said the key objectives now are to maximise the revenue, jobs and other economic benefits from expanded gaming, while minimising the “unintended” possible negative consequences.
