Large Las Vegas-style casino resorts are unlikely to be suitable additions to the Mexican gaming market, one expert has stated.
Alfredo G Lazcano Samano, an attorney with experience and specialisation in the gaming industry, told InterGaming there is “no doubt” that the gaming industry is making a significant contribution to Mexico’s economy. Soon, he claimed, the industry would be supporting as many as 80,000 direct jobs and a further 150,000 indirect jobs.
However, even if the country’s gaming laws were changed to allow for large-scale casino resorts, Samano said such developments may not be favoured among operators.
“With so many millions of potential gambling customers living in cities with dense populations, the gaming enterprises would essentially be targeting the local clientele through gaming parlours or medium-sized casinos,” he said. “The model of fully-fledged casino resorts that we see in Las Vegas or Macau is probably not the most suitable, at least in the following five or even 10 years.”
Mexico’s tourism industry is a key economic driver for the country, Samano added, suggesting that gaming could “complement” existing attractions and “enrich” the types of entertainment currently on offer.
