Britain’s opposition Labour Party would consider forcing bookmakers to pay into a fund to help problem gamblers, said deputy leader Tom Watson at the party’s annual conference.

He said that the money would help to end the "destructive cycle of addiction." In response the Association of British Bookmakers has commented that it would not be opposed to paying an "appropriate, compulsory levy" to fund treatment of problem gambling.

The top target is fixed odds betting machines, already the subject of speculation that their top stake would be cut from £100 to £2.
