In India, the Goa government has clarified that it would not ask offshore casino vessels to move out of the Mandovi River until an alternative site is provided.

“While on one side we are appealing for investors to come to Goa, if we shut down the casinos before giving them an alternative site it would send a wrong signal,” Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said.

The Goa government had set a deadline of March 31, 2016, for itself to shift the offshore casino vessels from Mandovi River. However, the government has not yet finalised the sites for these vessels to anchor.

Parsekar said the closing of the casinos would also result in unemployment for 2,500 Goans working on the ships, besides affecting the revenue of the state.
