The initial go-ahead has finally been given for casinos to operate in Taiwan, following months of government debate.

The Council for Economic Planning and Development has compiled a detailed report outlining the need to develop a casino industry in the country. The organisation estimates that such an industry could employ around 5.000 full-time workers and 15,000 temporary workers.

Equally important to the authorities, however, are the revenues to be gained from taxing the casinos, which seem likely to be developed on the country’s peripheral islands. All casinos must be developed as part of holiday resorts so that they help to boost tourism.
