The money came from the Paul and Karin Gauselmann Foundation and was signed over at a ceremony in the company headquarters by Paul with the mayor of the city, Frank Haberbosch.

It is the largest donation that the city has ever received in its 1,200-year history. It will be used to finance local charitable nd public weldfare projects.

Said Paul Gauselmann: “I have always felt connected to the city of Lûbbecke. After all, our production plant, which makes a signfiicant contribution to the success of the Merkur Group, has been there for almost 50 years.”

Additonally, sales offices, R&D workshops and logistics are located in the city, which has around 25,000 inhabitants.

Much of the remainder of the Merkur facilities, including the head office itself, is located next door in the smaller town of Espelkamp. In April, Gauselmann donated €8.7m to Espelkamp through the foundation. He has personally also pledged €6m towards two daycare centres in Gestringen and in Espelkamp.
