France’s gambling regulator says tote monopoly Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU) has suffered a decline in revenue for the first time since the end of the coronavirus pandemic.

Stakes and gross gaming revenue for the first half of 2024 fell by two per cent and 2.3 per cent, respectively, dropping to levels lower than in 2022.

Q1 this year was “particularly tough” for PMU, regulator L’Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ) said, with a four per cent decline in stakes and GGR.

However, the ANJ said GGR for La Française des Jeux (FDJ) rose 5.5 per cent year-on-year to €5.5bn.

“These strong performances are primarily due to sports betting in retail outlets, with GGR increasing by 14 per cent to €611m during this period,” the regulator said.

Combined GGR for FDJ and PMU represent 78.5 per cent of the market.
