The managing director of ILD, the consortium behind Spain's huge Gran Scala project, has said that construction will begin this year.

Paul Stephan Allegrini denied that financial problems had delayed the start of building, saying that such a large project needed time to secure the necessary authorisations. “If you consider that we are talking about more than 1,300 properties (32 of which will be casinos) with 130 owners, you will understand that negotiations and documentation takes time,” he said.

He added that the complex was scheduled for opening in 2012, although the total project will not be concluded until 2020.
