An anti-casino coalition in the US state of Massachusetts has challenged the court decision to shelve a planned state-wide ballot question which could have led to the repeal of a 2011 law allowing casinos in Massachusetts.

A week after Massachusetts attorney general Martha Coakley had rejected the proposed anti-casino ballot question, ruling it “unconstitutional”, Coakley has agreed to the injunction.

The anti-casino coalition will now collect signatures in support of the injunction, requiring 69,000 signatories if the challenge is not to be dismissed.

John Ribeiro, chairman of the Committee to Repeal the Casino Deal, said around 500 volunteers were on hand to collect the signatures required to force the state’s Supreme Judicial Court to rule on the challenge.

Ribeiro added that the coalition had received a boost by Tuesday's vote in West Springfield, Massachusetts, to reject the proposed Hard Rock casino resort in the state.
