Industry veteran Devlin has been chairman of Marston’s since September, 2013, and is also currently chair of SIS and a non-executive director of the Football Association. He had previously been chairman of gaming operator and developer Gamesys for a decade up to 2016.

Current chairman Davis departs at the start of April, with Devlin initially joining the board on February 1 before stepping up.

Devlin said: "William Hill is a business and brand I have greatly admired during my years in the leisure sector and more recently as chair of SIS.

“I recognise there are both immediate challenges to address for the industry and considerable medium and longer term opportunities for the group."
