The casino - the last of eight large casino licences to be awarded in the UK - will house up to 150 slot machines with a maximum jackpot of £4,000 and 30 blackjack and poker tables.

Matt Tucker, chairman of Southampton City Council's licensing committee, said: “The regeneration of the waterfront at Royal Pier and Mayflower Park has been a long-standing aspiration for the city.

“The casino will play a big part in making the redevelopment happen.”

The casino is expected to create more than 180 new jobs while the local authority will receive at least two per cent of gross gaming revenues from the casino, with Aspers also paying £50,000 a year towards responsible gambling initiatives.
