In the US, Genting Resorts World has teamed up with a Florida racetrack on a proposed slots-only casino project.

Resorts World Miami, as the project is called, would use a gaming licence held by Gulfstream Park to open a facility in Miami’s Biscayne Bay offering 2,000 slot machines, poker and off-track betting.

It’s a “less lucrative option” than the $3.1bn megaresort originally sought by the company, but as Genting lobbyist Brian Ballard describes it, it’s a way into the market.

“Genting, over the past couple of years, has decided to look at this with a fresh set of eyes,” he said. “I think it’s game-changing,” said Lonny Powell, CEO of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association. “This is the first partnership where the revenue stream and investment would actually go back into the horses.”
