How jackpots continue to capture the imagination

The elation of winning a headline-making jackpot prize is perhaps known by only a handful of casino patrons. Sadly, the writer isn’t among these lucky few. The possibility of winning a life-changing sum, however, is what drives many players to the gaming floor and continues to build the remarkable appeal of slot games.

According to Greg Colella, senior director of product management at Bally Technologies, whose company offers both wide-area progressive and near-area progressive jackpots, the chance of winning a major prize is at the very heart of the gambling experience.

“The perception that with one spin of the reels your luck can change is a sentiment that we all share, regardless of culture,” he said. “Games with large, often times life-changing progressive jackpots are very attractive, as they give players something to chase.”

Simon McCarthy, sales and marketing director at JPM, said progressive jackpots can enhance the player experience. “They can create a feeling of community among players and deliver an element of theatre to the gaming floor,” he said. “The prospect of winning a large sum of money has universal appeal. However, jackpots are not all about creating a life-changing experience. In many cases, players will prefer the opportunity of smaller and more regular wins.”

Jackpots may have a “universal appeal” for players across the world, but for casino operators they play a key role, explained a spokesperson for Spielo International.
