THE casinos of Portugal are slowly recovering revenues after losing almost a third of their business since the 2008 financial crisis.

Although the 11 locations in the country face no competition from any other land-based gambling, the state lotteries are a major competitor with a large, professionally-run business, widespread throughout the country.
