Having seen strong demand for its NFC contactless payment system, Sound Leisure believes that contactless payment could be a “fantastic option” for pool and hockey tables as well.

Sound Leisure introduced the NFC contactless payment system when it launched the VHub jukebox. Since then, the UK-based company has converted a wide range of machines to the contactless technology in response to strong customer demand.

The latest conversion is to a SAM Leisure pool table.

“From the beginning of the year through to April more contactless transactions were processed than for the whole of 2011,” explained Sound Leisure managing director Chris Black. “This is a trend that is set to continue and that is why when we launched the VHub we built in the flexibility to allow the NFC readers to be retrofitted at any time.

“We firmly believe that this technology will be highly beneficial to our industry moving forward.”

Sound Leisure has become something an NFC specialist over the past few years, designer of the device, Ian Griffiths of Teckpro, said.

“The SL team have a good understanding of the technology and we have worked on some very interesting projects together, we even fitted the NFC readers to collection buckets for a choir in London,” he said.

SAM Leisure was “thrilled” with the conversion of its pool table and hinted at future developments along these lines for the industry.

“There is little doubt that contactless payment could be a fantastic option for pool and hockey tables, which could not only attract players but make the life of operators a lot easier too,” said managing director Gary Drage.
