The Vietnam government is considering giving the green light to a major casino resort complex in Quang Ninh Province.

Minister Vu Duc Dam, chief of the government office, said that the government was to decide whether the plans to develop a gaming complex in the Van Don district can go ahead, Vietnam News reports.

Speaking at a press conference, he explained that the Ministry of Planning and Investment has been charged with the task of assessing the viability of such a project.

It is believed the resort will cost in the region of $4bn and would play a major role in the development of the region’s tourism offering.

The Vietnam Investment Review reports that Genting, the Malaysia-based casino operator, has signed a memorandum of understanding to study the feasibility of developing an integrated resort in the area.

Las Vegas Sands has also been linked to building a major billion-dollar casino resort in Vietnam, which is viewed by many to be a future ‘hotspot’ for the industry.

Earlier this month, Vietnam’s Minister for Finance, Vuong Dinh Hue, visited Singapore to meet with representatives from various gaming authorities, fuelling speculation that the country was to press ahead with plans for integrated casino resorts.

Although Hue said that sports betting would be regulated soon, casino developers may still have to wait to see whether the government will allow its citizens to gamble in casinos.
