The Casinos Austria-owned property, which replaced Grand Casino Brussels when it opened its doors in February 2010, is understood to be suffering the effects of high taxation, RTBF reports.

The property’s visitor numbers have also failed to meet expectations, largely due to the smoking ban and competition from online gaming.

Consequently, the casino’s management is seeking to reduce the taxes and fees paid to the authorities. The casino presently pays €24m a year in property taxes, fees to the city and taxes on games.

Politicians are understood to be reluctant to move on the issue, however.
