More than 20,000 guests visited Galaxy Entertainment's new $2bn Galaxy Macau resort within 90 minutes of it officially opening its doors on May 15.

The 550,000sq.m integrated casino and hotel resort, which was delayed for almost two years, is the third to open on the Cotai Strip and is one of a new generation of properties that the authorities hope will diversify Macau’s tourism offering from relying solely on gaming.

Among 3,000 VIP guests at the grand opening ceremony was Dr Lui Che Woo, founder and chairman of the Galaxy Entertainment Group.

"Galaxy Entertainment Group is committed to the local economy by helping transform Macau into a diversified global tourism and entertainment hub," he said. "By integrating traditional Asian culture with western management style, we have created a business model with ‘World Class, Asian Heart’ that will drive the success of our signature property, Galaxy Macau, and help realise Macau’s vast potential as a tourism destination."

Galaxy Macau brings together three hotel brands - Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts, Okura Hotels and Resorts and Galaxy Hotel - to provide a total of 2,200 hotel rooms, suites and villas, representing 12 per cent of Macau’s current room capacity. In addition to a 450-table casino, the property also boasts a beach resort, several pools, and a 4,000sq.m skytop wave pool, as well as more than 50 food and beverage outlets.

It is facilities such as these, said Woo, that sets the new resort apart from its peers. "We believe this will help attract more visitors from different countries, extend their staying period in the city and create a more diversified destination choice for local, Asian and international travellers," he said.
