One of Las Vegas' most iconic hotels has closed its doors. The Sahara Hotel and Casino, once the favourite of the 'Rat Pack,' closed down on Monday after nearly 60 years in operation.

The location was used in the famous movie Ocean’s Eleven (1960). It had over 1,700 rooms and used a Moroccan theme. The hotel had gradually descended the list of popular destinations on the Strip. Its position at the north end of the Strip is less acceptable these days and it had a profound effect on its viability, even after the ailing hotel was taken over in 2007 by the night club owner Sam Nazarian, who attempted to revive it to its former glory. Now Nazarian’s company, SBE Entertainment, has given up the fight to save the location, which is not thought to be under threat of demolition. It is simply being boarded up.

Around 1,000 workers have lost their jobs.
