City & Eastern Developers is seeking a judicial review over Newham Council's decision to award a London casino licence to Aspinalls.

Aspinalls was chosen as the preferred bidder for the right to develop what will be London’s largest casino at the Westfield Stratford City complex near to the 2012 Olympic site.

However, rival bidder City & Eastern has criticised this decision, arguing that regeneration - a criteria of the licencing process - is not at the heart of the winning bid.

The company’s Fergus Kinloch told the BBC: "Our scheme would have delivered 1,200 jobs and 800-plus housing units. The award of the licence doesn’t appear to have been won on the number of jobs created, on the amount of new space of development being undertaken or indeed the financial offer to Newham.

"Stratford is already regenerated, the shopping centre will be a huge success with or without the casino. This is a lost opportunity for the people of Newham - they had a chance to see some significant regeneration on the forgotten end of the borough."

City & Eastern has now asked a High Court judge to decide whether its bid was turned down unfairly.
