The Pacific island of Niue's government is considering approving plans to build a casino in order to boost tourism.

According to Radio New Zealand, Premier Toke Talagi first raised the idea a year ago and would be in favour of building a casino separate from hotel developments.

"We’ve got to make sure we’ve got the legislation in place to enable us to do that and as I understand it there are provisions in our current laws to enable us to do that but we’ve also got to ensure that the management of the casino is properly done so we might have to include legislation to enable us to do that," he said.

Niue has a population of just under 2,000 people but the island’s tourism sector is expected to grow following the news that Air New Zealand is planning to increase the capacity of its weekly flights.
