In an effort to tackle illegal gambling in the state, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has approved several grant requests to law enforcement agencies to fund their programmes.

The three grants, which total US$315,760, were approved under the Local Law Enforcement Grant Program following the state legislature’s decision to amend the system in January this year.

The board is authorised to award up to $2m annually in grants to such agencies and the state police for the purpose of investigating, enforcing and preventing unlawful gambling in the state.

“These grants go a long way in helping law enforcement offset the cost of uncovering and investigating illegal gambling operations, and then prosecuting violators,” said chairman Greg Fajt. “Most importantly, shutting down operations which contribute no tax revenue to the citizens of the Commonwealth is important in stabilising and maximising revenues at the tax-producing Pennsylvania licensed casinos.”
