A senior casino industry executive has cast doubt over the viability of the large casino resorts planned for Spain and Hungary.

Speaking at the Gaming Executive Summit in Madrid last week, IGT Europe’s Paulus Karskens questioned whether European customers would be interested in traveling long distances to visit either Gran Scala in Spain or EuroVegas in Hungary, particularly as casinos are so easily accessible locally.

“Europe is definitely a local market,” he asserted. “Players are not used to travel.

“I think it will be a difficult proposition to build these billion dollar destinations.”
