Expoazar, the organiser of the ELA 2009 expo in Mexico City, Mexico, is considering postponing the event until July in light of the current outbreak of swine flu the country.

Over the weekend, there has been a rise in the number of cases detected and the Mexican government has ordered the closure of schools, universities, theatres, museums and many gaming establishments.

The event’s organisers have consulted executives at the Banamex Centre, the venue for ELA 2009, the Mexican Association of Gaming Licensees, airlines, the Mexican Health Ministry and several Mexican embassies in Latin America and Europe.

Expoazar has ruled out the option of cancelling the show after speaking to exhibitors who consider the event to be too important to abandon. Depending on the progress of the flu outbreak, it is now either going to retain the original dates for the show, May 14-15, or postpone the exhibition to late July, by which time the problem is expected to be solved.

The company said it was most likely to pursue the latter option and reschedule the event. A decision is expected by tomorrow at the latest.
