Hermes, which operates Larnaca Airport, Cyprus, is believed to be considering building a new casino on the island, according to local reports.

The company’s chairman, Nicos Shacolas, is said to have written to the country’s House Commerce Committee outlining the plans for a casino, which is intended to boost the island’s tourism industry.

The airport has been relocated to a new building, leaving its old site vacant. It is unclear, however, whether Hermes plans to establish the casino in the new facility or to make use of the old building.

Despite a number of organisations calling for the creation of new casinos on the island in recent months, there remains a great deal of opposition to the idea within the government.
