A 7.1 per cent rise in gaming revenue is reported for South Korea’s casinos and other gambling outlets in 2016, to the equivalent of US$19.5bn.

South Korean gaming up

Much of the rise is down to a strong performance by lotteries and sports betting, says the National Gambling Control Commission.

Lottery sales were up by 9.3 per cent to $3.5bn and Sports Toto up 29.1 per cent. The only place where Koreans can gamble is at Kangwon Land, the casino and resort company in Gangwon Province, that develops abandoned mines and specialises in rebuilding them into casinos, resorts and other attractions.

Kangwon Land saw revenues rise 4.3 per cent from more than three million visitors.
