Penn National Gaming's Empress Casino in Joliet, Illinois, US, was closed temporarily following a fire on March 20.

The company said that the fire began in an area of the property that was undergoing construction as part of $50m renovation programme. It was contained on the land-side of the property before it could spread to the adjacent casino barge.

"Our first priority was to ensure the safety of our customers and our employees and we are thankful that no injuries have been reported following the diligent evacuation of the property," Said Peter M Carlino, chief executive officer of Penn National.

"As soon as practicable we will develop a plan that will allow us to bring the property back into operation so that we can bring our over 800 employees back to work as soon as possible."
