New Jersey senator Raymond Lesniak reintroduced legislation on Thursday, which would make the state the first to legalise online gambling in the US.

His original bill was passed through both houses of state government earlier this year but vetoed by Governor Chris Christie. Lesniak reportedly said on the day of veto that he would not reintroduce the bill without guarantee that it won’t be vetoed again, however he has decided to go ahead with it despite not having the compromise over fears that the New Jersey horse racing industry may not survive without the additional revenue that online gambling could provide.

According to Lesniak, the bill will be largely what he previously gave to Christie, who he hopes will have changed his mind by the end of the year when the bill is put on his desk.
