The Netherlands Gambling Authority’s chairman has clarified the country’s online licensing procedure.

René Jansen, in a keynote speech to the 2020 Gaming in Holland Conference on Tuesday of this week, referred to the incoming Dutch Remote Gaming Act that will come into force on March 1, 2021.

His remarks, reported in the Gaming in Holland newsletter, made clear that online licence applications must be submitted digitally through an online portal and the licensing period will open when the act comes into force on March 1.

He said: “If your application is incomplete or otherwise submitted without the proper diligence, you are at risk of being denied a licence or having that licence issued later than six months after submission.”

One of the hot topics was the "cooling-off" period during which operators who had illegally targeted Dutch payers in the past would be prevented from entering the new market. Jansen said that the authority (the KSA) would look at such an application investigating the applicant’s activities for a period of two years and eight months prior to the application.

This, he said, reflects the delay incurred in relation to the date on which the law was previously intended to enter into force.
