While most other Australian cities are gradually reopening, Sydney is in the grip of a surge in the pandemic that is seeing its FECs and bars remaining firmly shut.

The army has been deployed across the city to help enforce the lockdown. It will remain in place until at least August 28 with the population prevented from leaving home except for essential exercise, shopping or looking after others.

The city has already endured five weeks of lockdown with the authorities condemning a small number of people who constantly break the rules.
