It could be well into next year before the leisure industry gets back to “normal” according to a report from Deloitte, the professional services network.

In an insight into the effects of the pandemic, chief economist Ian Stewart said that the virus had brought with it “a massive shock to the economic system.”

Hospitality head Andreas Scriven said that travel restrictions and border closures had led to dramatic falls in revenue streams in the sector with destinations such as London reeling from a 42 per cent decline in tourists.

In Italy, the hotel sector was 90 per cent down. The cancellation of sporting events and closure of leisure venues had added to the negative impact.

Generally, it is expected that the leisure sector will begin to see a recovery late this year, with “normal” trading resuming by mid-2021.
