Theme parks in India are seeking permission to remain open in face of the Omicron Covid-19 variant, and are volunteering for stiff safety measures.

The trade association, IAAPI, has called on the state governments for the right to stay open as many would face permanent closure if the restrictions remain in place too long.

The venues are suggesting instead a limit on capacity and the restriction to online bookings only. Some states, notably West Bengal, Maharashtra, Haryana and Delhi, have closed down locations and another, Kamataka, has introduced weekend closures.

The Indian amusement industry only reopened at the end of October in 2021, after a year closed with previous infection waves.
