The Flambards theme park in Helston, Cornwall, UK, has closed with immediate effect, it was announced on Monday.

The park was operated by Livingston Leisure. The shock news came at the same time as the retirement of some of its older rides at the park, which opened in 1976.

A statement said that the park had "faced numerous challenges to continue bringing joy to families and visitors across the region."

The statement continued: “This difficult decision was reached only after all possible avenues had been exhausted and we fully recognise the impact of this closure on the local community and the sense of loss that it may bring.”

The park was rescued from closure in 2012 by the current owners, but increasing costs and a fall in footfall in recent years combined to make the continued operation of the park untenable.

The Ferdi’s Funland indoor play centre will continue as a standalone attraction from November 17.
