Aussie giant Tabcorp has thrown its hat into the ring in a bid to operate the UK’s National Lottery.

The lottery’s operating licence is up for grabs and bids are being taken by the UK’s Gambling Commission for review.

Tabcorp is one of the biggest gambling companies in Australia, running lotteries and sports betting. It has joined the current operator, Camelot and other bidders, including Sir Richard Branson, Richard Desmond the media king, Novamedia the Dutch operator of the People’s Postcode Lottery and other European operators such as Sazka and Francaise des Jeux.

The names are being collated by Rothschild, the investment bank that has been given the task of finding a suitable candidate.

The successful tender will have a monopoly of anything between seven and ten years. Camelot, which is Canada-owned, has run the lottery since its launch in 1994.
