Encore Boston Harbor has been awarded a Category 1 Sports Wagering Operator licence for Massachusetts.

Massachusetts Gaming Commission

The US state’s Gaming Commission voted for the move following a presentation by representatives at the casino company and a review of the application submitted by Wynn, which operates Encore Boston Harbor.

EBH must now obtain a certificate of operations and meet additional conditions before bets can be placed.

The MGC also wants to launch retail sports wagering for MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park Casino, which have also applied for Category 1 licences, in January.

The MGC also revealed a public hearing set for Monday focused on Category 3 sports wagering licences tethered to casino licensees.

Five applications for tethered Category 3 licenses have been submitted. Caesars Sportsbook and WynnBet would be tethered to Encore Boston Harbor.

BetMGM would be tethered to MGM Springfield if it too gets a Category 1 licence, while Plainridge Park Casino is going after tethered Category 3 licences for Fanatics and Penn Sports Interactive.

Further meetings regarding the Category 3 licences are to be held by the MGC throughout December.
